Looking Back & Looking Ahead
The Year Behind
Phew! The school year is over (or nearly over). It’s time to take a deep breath, get some well-deserved rest, and pat yourself on the back for a great year!
It has been a great year, with important milestones. Here are a few highlights.
- Three new sites, all who are new ECHSs authorized just this year. Welcome to The Ask Academy, Moreno Valley, and Amy Biehl!
- Hosted the first ever Gathering, bringing together ECHS leadership, IHE representatives, and industry professionals. Folks who attended told us that it was powerful and useful, and we’ll do it again next year.
- Published an entire video series of industry professionals speaking about their careers, preparation, and passion for IT, plus great advice for career seekers in all fields.
See them all here: https://eedw.nmrec1.org/career-videos/
- Completed a video series of higher education students from partnering IHEs. Look for these to be released in the coming months (more information below).
- Presented the EEDW at national conferences, including the NACEP conference. A lot of folks nationally are interested in what we’re doing here in New Mexico.
- Created the “Why IT” series, along with associated higher education courses by ECHS and pathway, to help counselors inform students about how they can benefit from IT courses and what courses will be useful, regardless of their pathways.
See them all at https://eedw.nmrec1.org/counselors/
- Hosted Q&A sessions with industry professionals to speak directly to students about the value of IT, professional skills for succeeding in the workforce, and career training and credentials.
- Focus group interviews with counselors and principals—We appreciated learning from you how we can support you better, and we’re using your feedback as part of our strategies for the current project year.
Our overall mission, as you can see, is to support all our partners in their primary mission: empower students to succeed in their higher education coursework and find success in the workforce.
The Year Ahead
The year ahead promises to be very exciting. We’re continuing the successes of the past year and building new opportunities for helping students get interested in online IT courses and succeed in their eventual careers, no matter their pathway. Here are just a few key highlights you can expect.
- Online mentoring pilot from June 24 - July 19: We’re inviting counselors to participate over the summer in a one-month pilot of the Mighty Networks platform and help ensure the platform will be engaging and useful for students, which leads us to...
- Online student mentoring: Using the Mighty Networks platform, students will have the opportunity starting next fall to communicate directly with business and industry professionals, ask questions, get career advice, learn what it takes to land and keep a great job. This asynchronous tool will be available to the “encouraged” students, and there will even be a special section for counselors to discuss and get support for their pressing needs.
- Reaching Up conference for students and counselors: We’re hosting a special two-day fall event for students and counselors focused on readiness for post-graduation success and different ways that IT is important across career fields. It’s going to be a lot of fun, with special activities conducted by partners and participating schools. Not just for IT students, but for students in any pathway. (We’ll probably change the name of the event, so keep your eyes open for more information.)
- Simplified student activity tracking: We heard you loud and clear. Beginning in the fall, ECHSs will only need to submit student–counselor interaction tracking twice per year (but we’ll need 100% timely submission). We’re even simplifying the types of information to submit, with a focus on unique interactions between school staff and students.
- On-your-side counselor support: We are here to help counselors empower, motivate, and guide students towards success. We’re bringing on one of NM’s top counselors to support counselors at participating ECHSs. That role will be to provide a thought partner who can help find tools, resources, and information counselors want when working with students. Most communication and support will be provided through the online platform, but phone, email, and on-site will also be available!
- The Gathering 2025: Given the smashing success of the 2024 Gathering, we’re doing it again! A full day of industry professionals, higher education partners, and ECHS principals and counselors working together to help students succeed.
- Higher Ed student videos: We completed production on video interviews of higher education students in IT fields, and they look amazing! These students have great information advice for high school kids in any field. We’ll release these over time (in fact, the first one is linked in this newsletter). Share them with the students you know!

Like I said, it’s going to be a great year! Thank you for sharing it with us!

CTE CyberNet is a blueprint for local education ecosystems, designed for implementation in communities with diverse stakeholder needs. The U.S. Department of Education identified three CAE Regional Resource Centers (CRRCs) to design, host, and lead a cohort of CTE CyberNet New Mexico Academy at San Juan College, based on subject-matter experts’ input in June.
CTE CyberNet aims to boost the number of CTE teachers who can prepare students for cybersecurity education and careers. It uses a local academy approach to deliver rigorous cybersecurity programs aligned with industry standards and certifications. My conversation with ChatGPT about supporting counselors.
ChatGPT--It’s here and it’s increasingly powerful, so we might as well learn to use it effectively. We can be sure that our students are starting to use it!
The question, then, is HOW can we use it, or, more specifically, how can counselors use ChatGPT to help them work with individual students? With so many students, each one with individual needs and interests, it can be a challenge to serve them all. Can ChatGPT help?
I started to put together a list of possible uses, but then I turned to ChatGPT. As an example, I asked ChatGPT how it can help high school counselors improve student engagement and motivation. Here’s the response...
ChatGPT can assist high school counselors in improving student engagement and motivation in several ways:
- Personalized Communication: ChatGPT can help draft personalized messages to students, offering encouragement, academic advice, and resources tailored to their individual needs.
- Resource Recommendation: It can suggest relevant articles, videos, and tools that align with students' interests and academic goals, keeping them engaged and motivated.
- Academic Support: ChatGPT can assist in creating study plans, providing explanations for difficult concepts, and offering tips for effective studying, helping students stay motivated and on track.
