EEDW Insights and Highlights

August 2024 EEDW Project Newsletter

Congratulations to you all for a successful start to the new academic year. The beginning of a new school year is always filled with excitement about new ideas, new opportunities, and renewed energy for the year ahead. We share your excitement as we are expanding our support for schools, collaborating with our ECHS, higher ed, and industry partners, and collecting information to learn how we are helping students take up dual credit IT courses.
A few highlights:
  • Our Counselor Support Specialist comes on board September 1, and I’m sure she will be a great asset to ECHS counselors. (ECHS counselors: keep a look out for her
self-introduction in the next couple of weeks.)
  • The 2024 Student Ed Tech Conference is coming up quickly for students in the “encouragement group.” This will be a fun, interactive event to explore how IT knowledge is useful across every career.
  • New resources for students and counselors on preparing for careers, such as improving communication skills, strategies for succeeding in online courses, and jobs in sectors that benefit from IT skills. Some samples are in this newsletter, and you can find more on the web site.
  • Better and easier tools for understanding how EEDW is being implemented in your schools.
  • New online Communication Network for counselors and students, through Mighty Networks, with sign-up available now.
Our beginning-of-the-year meetings with ECHS leadership were great and really helped set the stage for a successful project year. As you implement EEWD in your schools this year, we are always available to provide support, answer questions, and help find solutions that benefit your students.

I’m looking forward to this new year, and I share your enthusiasm for helping all students find success both now in school and later when they transition into careers. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to education and for all that you do to make a positive impact in your school community.

Early College High School Beginning of Year Meetings

The EEDW team met with all the early college high schools with beginning-of-year meetings.
This was a time for each school’s administrators and counselors to hear from executive director
David Bowman, business engagement coordinator Jaime Cherry, and ECHS and HED
Coordinator Eric Arpelar. The purpose and methodology were covered again to make each site
aware. With the changes and improvements of the project, we covered different events and areas
of research in the project. Read more...
Xavier Flores, a student at Doña Ana Community College, has quite the story. Once a truck driver, he decided to shift gears and pursue Cyber Security. His brother’s encouragement played a pivotal role in this decision. Although the transition hasn’t always been easy—there have been overwhelming moments—Xavier’s professor provided the guidance he needed to persevere. As Xavier wisely puts it, “Take a breath, realize it’s one step at a time.”

Unlocking Tech Career Potential in Today's Students
