EEDW Insights and Highlights

April 2024 EEDW Project Newsletter

We're getting deeper into project year three, and so many great things are happening!

Our overall theme for the year is "SUPPORT" - and we're focused on supporting students and ECHS staff be successful. We're on your side as your partners in helping students as they complete their career pathways and prepare for life after graduation.

The "Gathering 2024" was a success: bringing together counselors, principals, higher education, and industry partners. Now we're putting together a fall conference for counselors and ECHS students. It will be a highly interactive event for students in all pathways to explore how IT can help them in their future careers, learn skills for college success, and gain insight on what employers need. (There's also going to be a very special hands-on event during the day and a unique and fun event for the night!) Stay tuned for more information about this.

Make sure to read on. There's lots about upcoming opportunities for students, news from our partners, featured counselors and schools, and new resources to help answer the question: "Why should I take an IT course?"

Thank you for joining with us in this important project. If there is anything we can do for you...we're just a phone call or email away!

“Embracing S.T.E.A.M”
I find great fulfillment in collaborating with high school students, assisting them in honing their academic preferences, cultivating their talents, and understanding their strengths. This passion is deeply rooted in the profound impact that my own high school educators and mentors had on me.

"Contributing to their journey of self-discovery and goal-setting is a privilege I treasure immensely, as I draw inspiration from being a supportive presence in their formative years."

MORENO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
“A Handcraft Education in the Digital Age!”
We believe the EEDW project will help us develop a sustainable program in our rural area. Because of obstacles such as housing, and a small population of students, IT coursework is not available in middle school, and we have offered only a few courses in high school. Through the EEDW model, students will have access to190/2 academic and career opportunities currently not available to them. When we found the pilot, we thought, “this is it!” This program is exactly what we’ve tried to build on our own.

EEDW UPDATES AND NEWS

CTE Cybernet Academy

CTE CyberNet is a blueprint for local education ecosystems, designed for implementation in communities with diverse stakeholder needs. The U.S. Department of Education identified three CAE Regional Resource Centers (CRRCs) to design, host, and lead a cohort of CTE CyberNet New Mexico Academy at San Juan College, based on subject-matter experts' input in June.

CTE CyberNet aims to boost the number of CTE teachers who can prepare students for cybersecurity education and careers. It uses a local academy approach to deliver rigorous cybersecurity programs aligned with industry standards and certifications. The academies provide strategies and tools to impart knowledge outlined in the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education and Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity.

How much encouragement does it take to

generate interest in IT careers?

The IT industry reports high demand for a workforce in New Mexico - there are more available IT jobs than New Mexicans are currently able to fill. One way to build a workforce pipeline is through career pathways beginning in high school. But the presence of a pathway does not mean students are interested in the pathway or long-term IT careers. In Early College High Schools (ECHS), we observe limited enrollment in IT courses and persistence in the pathway. There are many reasons why this could be, but we hope to figure out how we might increase enrollment. This begs the following questions:

How much encouragement is enough to change student perceptions?
What types of encouragement make a difference in changing student perceptions?

All ECHS students are eligible to enroll in IT courses, online or in-person. EEDW selected students at random in each ECHS receive “extra encouragement” – encouragement or information above and beyond what your school already offers – to see if this will help generate more interest in students. The extra encouragement includes messages about IT careers and pathways, videos from industry professionals, question and answer sessions with industry professionals, and mentoring opportunities. We hope to figure out which approach or combination of approaches and how much of it is necessary to generate student interest. It’s also possible these approaches may not generate interest, which is also an important lesson to learn. Lessons learned about strategies utilized in EEDW will help inform educators and policy makers throughout the state of New Mexico, as well as nationwide. A ready workforce is a national need.

A Few Final Thoughts about EEDW

We have the potential through EEDW not only to improve learning experiences during the high school years and post-graduation studies but also to prepare students for success when they first step into their professional roles.

Thank you for all you do!
